The importance of SSL, https and security for your website.

SSL may sound familiar to many people but they might not necessarily know what it is. It’s something to do with the Internet, right? SSL means “Secure Sockets Layer”.

Many large and popular websites already have SSL, even though you may not know it. Look at your navigation bar above and you’ll notice a padlock; this means any data transmitted between your browser and the website you’re visiting will be secure.

Simply put, Secure Sockets Layer is used to secure the data transmitted over the internet between your computer and the destination servers. This could be the password you used to log into Facebook or your credit card information when you are purchasing something online, basically any important information you wouldn’t want others to know.

With an SSL certificate, any information that is transmitted becomes encrypted by inserting random characters into the original message making it unreadable to everyone except the intended server. This makes it nearly impossible for hackers to steal your information.

Google now uses your site’s ability to support SSL (or https at the front of yur web address) as a ranking signal and it will have a minor impact in Google search. If you’re interested in protecting your website, contact us today.

A successful website isn’t just pretty face.

Websites are communication tools – they provide information and guidance about your product and service to the world. It’s likely that your website will be the first interaction someone has with your business. That’s a critical moment, and you need to make a good first impression.

That’s why we design websites with the user experience in mind. When someone visits your website they shouldn’t have to think what to do; they should be able to find the information they need quickly and easily in order to achieve the outcome they want, regardless of the device they’re using.

Having a great looking website is no good if people can’t use it.

Got something to say?

If you’d like the ability to update your own website without having to wait on — or pay for — a web developer, you need a Content Management System (CMS). A CMS allows you to log in from any computer with internet access and make changes to the content of your website. It also means that the content of your website is always up-to-date (and search engines like to know that you are constantly updating your website).

We recommend WordPress as our preferred CMS for client websites — one of the most popular systems around and used by more than 60 million websites worldwide. WordPress is quick and simple to use — if you can use Microsoft Word you can use WordPress. It currently powers more that 17% of the worlds websites and is a stable and well-supported platform.

Mobile simplicity is the way forward.

Jeffrey Zeldman, one of the Internet’s foremost proponents of Web Standards, has summarised the Zeldman’s Year In Design for 2015. Interestingly, and perhaps not surprisingly, mobile-first and the simplification of the user interface figure highly. Making websites respond to mobile devices and removing clutter from the screen allows users to find the information they need quickly and easily.

That’s what we provide for our clients, simple smart websites which allow your user to find the information they need to make a decision about your product or service.

Anyway, here’s the list. Compare your own website to these points, and if you’re not happy, get in touch.

  • Mobile is today’s first screen. So design responsively, focusing on content and structure first.
  • Websites and apps alike should remove distractions and let people interact as directly as possible with content.
  • 90 percent of design is typography. And the other 90 percent is whitespace.
  • Boost usability and pleasure with progressive disclosure: menus and functions that appear only when needed.
  • One illustration or original photo beats 100 stock images.
  • Design your system to serve your content, not the other way around.
  • Remove each detail from your design until it breaks.
  • Style is the servant of brand and content. Style without purpose is noise.
  • Nobody waits. Speed is to today’s design what ornament was to yesterday’s.
  • Don’t design to prove you’re clever. Design to make the user think she is.
